There are two major types of handheld nebulizers for treating asthma,
- jet nebulizers, also known as atomizers,
- and ultrasonic nebulizers.
Jet nebulizers come in one of four types.
Type 1 is constant output of aerosol powered by an air compressor constantly forces air converted into aerosol for the patient to then inhale.
Type 2 of jet nebulizer is the breath-enhanced jet nebulizer, which increases the rate at which the medicated mist is created.
Type 3 of jet nebulizer is the dosimetric jet nebulizer, which releases the mist only when the patient inhales.
Type 4 is non-constant output of aerosol powered by an air flow from the squeezed rubber bulb which forces air converted liquid into aerosol for the patient to then inhale.
